Chuc Mung Nam Moi - Happy Newyear
The Lunar New Year or ‘Tet’ as they call it in Vietnam has begon on the 23rd of Januari. It came with a huge migration from Vietnamese people working in the cities and industrial parks and moving to their hometown in the country side. It is the only time of the year when the streets in Saigon are pretty quiet as the New Year is celebrated at home with the family.
One of the traditions of ‘Tet’ is the giving away of red envelopes with small money to children, staff, housemaids, etc. This money is believed to bring luck and fortune and to scare away ghosts.
So I went to Thien An, with some 80 red envelopes filled with 10.000 VND notes (0,5 USD) to bring luck to our kids. Also the staff of Thien An (Minh, Tai, Hanh , Linh and Nhi) were delighted with receiving the envelopes, which was on top of the lucky money filled with a well-deserved ‘Tet’ bonus.
